Maamis in Anna's Kalyaanam

This is dedicated to Anna and Kasthuri for completing >one month of marriage. Long way to go guys!

Well, this was another trip being long awaited by the Maamis for the reasons as listed below:
  1. Catching up with IMT junta
  2. Golden opportunity to come across any potential Mama material
  3. Kalyaana Saapaadu (Wedding food in literal sense, to be interpreted as the special typical menu in an Iyangar wedding)
  4. An escape route from monotonous work routine
  5. Rebonding of Maamis over one of their favourite social rituals - marriage, that too a Tam Bram one!
So, while SM showed off her busy work life by attending virtual meetings on airport (mobile phone and laptop being put to full use), DM enjoyed catching up with Surya over a long Costa coffee session to begin the day(the quantity of 1 regular cup was easily more than sufficient for 3 people). SM righteously followed the typical Tam tradition of journeys. She had brought Idlis soaked in Oil mixed with gun powder. Simply yum!
Once we boarded the flight, all the 3 chose reading to pass their time - Surya grabbed the Airline magazine, DM took out her new History novel on Mughals and SM, to everyone's surprise, had this book on Sai Baba (her strong religious beliefs are rarely questioned by others)! However, within an hour's time, Surya was reading DM's novel whereas the Maamis got together on listening to their all time favourite Rehman songs. They had a good time appreciating the music, feeling proud of their nativity. At this point, SM had something unusual to say. She had already started missing Delhi and Hindi!

As soon as they checked into the hotel room in Chennai by noon, they could feel the toll of travelling. Hunger pushed them towards the banquet hall for lunch where they met Anna, the would-be groom, all surrounded by relatives and friends, being very well the cynosure. His warm welcome was representative of the fact that he was quite happy to have finally found someone to get some moral support from!

After a sumptuous lunch, we met up with other IMT junta (most of them being our batchmates). We were still awaiting our gang (popularly known as cockroach/cool campus gang) members, from Mumbai and Bengaluru. In the meantime, Surya took the Maamis out for a post-lunch (much needed) walk. A delicious lunch always welcomes a sedating nap, which was gladly accepted by the 3. Our Maamis, however, could not find much peace due to change of place. So, they decided to chit-chat over an early tea session about their recent confusions in love life.

Mumbaiyas (including GJ & wife, AC and SB) made a grand entry. And then everybody's reaction on seeing DM really made her the happiest soul on earth. Each one of them told her that she had lost quite a few kilos! DM had already made a mental note of the fact that both AC & SB, on the other hand, had gained some weight.

After the initial enthusiasm died down, all pushed each other to get ready for the Reception function, for which quite understandably, the female gang members took loads of time. General observation - Female friends enjoy helping each other out with make-up tips and materials. Once everyone reached the venue, began the enthusiastic chattering of different groups in IMT, surprised to see the modified (good/bad) versions of each other, varying in degrees.

Late night chat-up session of the Cool campus gang (CCG) succeeded the dinner and birthday celebration of Anna in which best of attempts were made by his friends & family to humiliate him in front of his future life partner. No body knew then what challenge awaited them the following day. Waking up from the then most needed sleep, taking a bath, getting dressed, reaching the venue - all these tasks had to be completed by 5 AM! As expected by Anna, despite his repeated wake-up and follow-up calls, CCG reached by 6-6.30 AM. Even the ever-energizing filter coffee could help them the least to keep themselves awake! They behaved like mute spectators who are paid to attend some political rally. Well, the ritualistic torture (for both the audience and the victims, i.e., the bride and the groom) got over by around 12 noon, post which the CCG gang felt like congratulating the couple for successfully getting married.

Please note that the above extract is an exaggerated version of the live marriage incident. Oops...we completely lost track of the Maamis, didn't we?

Well, Maamis were happy souls to be with each other overseeing the proceedings there, thinking they may have to go through the same in some years to come. They were feeling at home for sure!
