Maamis Strike Back!!
Before you start wondering what do I mean by the term 'Maamis', allow me to deal with your concern. 'Maami' is a female who chooses to value and abide by certain beliefs considered to be primitive and archaic by the people of her generation. I must clarify that all such beliefs and value system signify the traits required to walk on the righteous path (as always preached by our elders and parents). For instance, never drink and smoke as they are injurious to health, premarital sex is unimaginable, eating only veg food is preferable and so on. So, these 'Maamis' may earn a good name for themselves amidst our parents but unfortunately their fellow beings look at them in both awe (as they cannot be like them) and disgust (thinking how can anyone be like that). In short, as we term any girl 'Aunty' in common parlance here in north India, similarly 'Maami' is the term used down south.
So, having given the backdrop of the story, let me begin the tale of 2 Maamis. These 2 maamis after completing their graduation from a school-like college (with a lot of emphasis on academics) land in IMT for their PG. One joined the (vella) marketing force and the other became a part of the (padhaku) fin batch. Both were similar to the extent of being mistaken as sisters - Tam Bram (aiyer), single child, east delhi residents, confused (a bit) souls, Delhiite father, mother into teaching profession, use spectacles (with comparable myopic power), simple, sincere & dedicated to work. Don't worry...differences do exist between the 2. One is more hyper-active than the other. She is dominating, focussed, gregarious and self-driven unlike the other who is on the calmer and reserved side. The former is interested in sports, music, and dance while the latter is into music and blogging. Quite unlikely but both of them (inspite of being Maamis) are tom-boyish in their personality and attitude.
These 2 were just acquainted with each other during grad days and it was only in the first year of PG that they came closer (not even during an year of work life). Due to some unexpected turn of events, they also became roomies in the second year. It was then that they got to know each other quite well. They shared their secrets, inhibitions, and ambitions and to their surprise they found each other quite similar. It was like the same core product was packaged differently. One more thing that happened to these 2 Maamis in IMT is the change in their appearance and dressing sense that actually attracted quite a lot of people's admiration in their respective social circles.
The Maamis are a happier lot now staying with each other, fighting over trivial issues, getting upset for nothing, arguing for the heck of it, worrying for the uncertain but having each other as the reason to get back to their room. I wonder what will happen to them when each gets married and begins a new life, a life that would expect them to bear several responsibilities and act with maturity. Only God can guide them!
